Cult gig of the month. Mahogany at Café Blah, Wilmslow Road, Manchester.

The US duo of Andrew Prinz and Jaclyn Slimm - known as Mahogany - are now a trio, with the recent addition of drummer Charlotte Anne Dole. All three of them will be bringing together a little bit of shoegaze, a touch of post punk and a sprinkle of neo-classical for their gig in Withington this month. They’ve performed with bands like Interpol, Bloc Party and Vampire Weekend and have been active - in one form or another - for more than 30 years. Cult Manchester’s Jools Taylor (editor of @the_setlist24) talked with Mahogany's Andrew about their upcoming Manchester date at Café Blah, all things cult and ‘liquid architecture’.
Cult Manchester: I noticed after some research you have some famous fans such as Bloc Party, who you’ve supported on tour in the past. Is there anyone else you wouldn't mind opening up for?
Andrew Prinz: It's indeed interesting who might be listening, but fate has ways best left undisturbed. Certainly, a blessing when things like that come through.
CM: Are there any dream venues across the UK and Ireland that you still want to play after this tour?
AP: We reckon most bands keep a running list. But it would be great to play the Empress Ballroom in Blackpool again.
CM: You're going across Europe to cities like Berlin, Paris and London. Manchester is going to be the best, right?
AP: How did you know? Being ‘of the North’ ourselves - first in Detroit and then moving to the East Coast - it does seem somehow apropos.
CM: You formed in Michigan but relocated to Brooklyn in New York early on in your careers - which state feels more like a homecoming gig when you play there?
AP: Neither really, as we're in NYC so often. Michigan has changed quite a lot, while NYC is on more of a familiar return to its classic - or neo-classic - self.
CM: When we first contacted you, Mahogany was a duo. You’re now a trio. Tell us about your new drummer, Charlotte Anne Dole.
AP: Charlotte is a brilliant and versatile drummer whose accomplishments include work with Cymbals Eat Guitars, Willy Mason, Cult Objects and others – we’re very fortunate to have her along!
CM: What's your favourite cult thing?
AP: Goethe once said, ‘music is liquid architecture’. That sounds like the kind of frame you’re talking about.
Mahogany will be playing Manchester’s Café Blah at 445 Wilmslow Road, Withington, Manchester on Sunday 27 September as part of a string of European dates throughout the month. They will also be joined by both Paid by Cash and Adele Dazeem. Tickets available here.
